The Way People are Represented Matters
Feminist Midterm
For a Herron midterm project the class was assigned to tackle a societal issue in a photographic series of work. I decided to address sexism portrayed in the media as women are traditionally photographed boudoir style aimed at beauty and sexuality whereas men are photographed to show wealth, power and status. To flip the rolls, I had the female models wear business attire and the male models wear lingerie. I also used pink film over the strobes for color symbolism representing femininity. The idea behind the table scene was glass to symbolize the “glass ceiling” and the table being a woman’s body turning her into an object to depict the objectification of women. The act of eating visually and literally replicates the consumption of sexism in the media as well as desserts are often used as euphemisms for the female body. I then redid the same scene with a man under the table and other scenes depicting women taking charge.
Chelsie Walsman, a fellow colleague and Herron alumna, joined me on my project and helped gather volunteer models, shooting, editing and staging.
